Overwatch 2 Fans Demand More from Genesis Anime Short, Hoping for a Full-Length Series!
Ever since Overwatch captured the hearts of gamers worldwide, fans have eagerly awaited the expansion of the game’s captivating storyline. The idea of an Overwatch anime series seemed like a natural fit, and Blizzard finally dipped their toes into the realm of multi-part storytelling with Genesis, a three-part anime short. However, while fans were blown away by the debut episode, they couldn’t help but yearn for more, longing for a full-length series to explore the rich world of Overwatch in greater detail.
Blizzard’s Overwatch animated shorts have been a massive success over the years, leaving fans hungry for more narrative-driven content. Genesis, consisting of a handful of five-minute episodes, marked Blizzard’s first foray into a multi-part anime series. The debut episode served as an introduction to the Omnic crisis, the event that led to the formation of Overwatch. Fans were captivated by the storyline, but left wanting more due to the short run time of each episode.
Shortly after the premiere of Genesis Part One: Dawn, Overwatch 2 players took to social media platforms to express their desire for a more substantial anime experience. Twitch streamer Joystick expressed their disappointment, exclaiming, “Overwatch Genesis was just getting good, and then it stopped!” Support legend ML7 echoed the sentiment, eagerly anticipating more from the Overwatch Genesis mini-series, but lamenting its brevity.
Fans couldn’t help but draw comparisons between the Overwatch anime and other game-based series, particularly highlighting the likes of LoL’s Arcane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners as superior examples. The longing for a full-blown series with Overwatch team members embarking on missions, engaging in banter, teaming up with outlaws, and battling Talon resonated strongly among fans.
Reddit users joined the chorus, expressing their disappointment with the short episode length. However, they remained hopeful that Blizzard would consider expanding the series in the future. Interestingly, back in 2020, it was reported that Nick van Dyk, co-president of Activision Blizzard Studios, had developed and sold an animated series based on Blizzard’s Overwatch franchise, alongside an anime-styled Diablo show for Netflix. While neither series has been officially announced yet, fans are optimistic that Genesis could be a sign of things to come, especially with the impending release of Overwatch 2’s PvE content.
The desire for a full-length Overwatch anime series has been ignited by the debut of the Genesis anime short. Fans crave an immersive exploration of the Overwatch universe, witnessing their favorite heroes in action and delving deeper into the game’s lore. While Blizzard’s Genesis has left fans longing for more, they remain hopeful that Blizzard will answer their call and provide the epic anime series they’ve been yearning for. With Overwatch 2 on the horizon and potential animated projects in the works, the dream of an Overwatch anime may soon become a reality.
